Breast Augmentation

Purpose

The purpose of a breast augment is to improve the size and appearance of the breast. Most women feel their breasts are too small. Having a breast augmentation procedure can make a woman feel more self confident and may drastically improve the way she views herself

Best Candidates are:

• Women who are physically healthy as well as realistic in their goals
• Woman who are looking for improvement, not perfection in the way they look

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

• To enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small
• To correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy
• To balance a difference in breast size
• As a reconstructive technique following breast surgery

Risks

• Common problem - capsular contracture occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten, causing the breast to feel hard. Removal of scar tissue may correct this problem
• A small percentage develop of women develop an infection around the implant
• Some women report that their nipples become oversensitive, undersensitve or even numb. These symptoms usually disappear within time.
• Occasionally breast implants may break or leak

Preparing for surgery

• Dr. Yalamanchi will evaluate your breast and explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for you.
• Dr. Yalamanchi will provide manufacturer's insert that comes with the implants
• Be frank in discussing risks and limitations
• Arrange for someone to drive after surgery
• Be sure to tell Dr.Yalamanchi if you smoke, are taking medications, vitamins or drugs

The surgery

• Timing for the surgery is usually approximately 2 to 3 hours
• Incisions will be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola or in the arm pit placement of breast implants may be under the muscle or on top, Dr. Yalamanchi will help make the proper decision of the placement of the implants.
• Resulting scars will be made as inconspicuous as possible
• Most cases performed under general anesthesia combined with a sedative before surgery
• Outpatient facility and hospitals are available

Recovery

• Rest for the first 24 hours after surgery
• Gradual resumption of daily activities
• You may return to work a few days after surgery
• THe swelling of yoru breasts may take two to five weeks to disappear
• Follow Dr. Yalamanchi's advice on when to begin exercise
• Vigorous exercise should be avoided until you can do it comfortably
• Avoid strenuous activities for several weeks
• Breasts will be sensitive to stimulation for two to three weeks avoid too much physical contact

Technique

Breast augmentation is ususally done to balance a difference in breast size, to improve body contour, or as a reconstructive technique following surgery.

Incisions are made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible, in the breast crease, around the nipple, or in the armpit. Breast tissue and skin is lifted to create a pocket for each implant.

The breast implant may be inserted directly under breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle.

After surgery, breasts appear fuller and more natural in tone and contour. Scars will fade with time.
